Zoom L6max on Linux
tl;dr: it works fine.
at Synth Camp this year, i met a few people who were using the Zoom LiveTrak L6/L6max compact mixers. these are a lot smaller than the Yamaha MG10XU i have been using for the past decade, and also support multichannel input in USB audio interface mode (the MG10XU only gives me a stereo mixdown). so i got curious...
while i am still running a Mac Pro 2012 as my main studio computer, i have switched over to Linux for my live sets, and eventually i will make the transition on the desktop as well. so how is Linux compatibility on these mixers?
the original L6 has been around for a bit longer, and i gathered the following:
- audio interface features work as you would expect on Linux
- Zoom's editor application is only for macOS and Windows
- but you can run it in a recent enough Wine
- alternatively, you can use Phil Miller's Zoom L6 Companion in a WebMIDI-capable browser
the newer L6max has some nice improvements over the original; specifically the independent control of speaker and headphone volume is a must-have for me. one might think all the info on the L6 applies, but Bay Mud discovered that their older Android phone did not work with the L6max, while the L6 was fine. clearly then, there are some differences between the two, and reports from Linux users on the L6max specifically were scarce.
nevertheless, i ordered the L6max. i am pleased to report i have had no issues using it with Linux. USB input and output work great, and the web editor does its job. actually, i haven't really even found myself needing to use the editor, since the built-in menu does all i need. it seems that on the L6, putting the device into mass storage mode (to access the SD card) is a bit of a pain point, as it must be done from the editor. no such problem on the L6max, where the storage mode can be activated from the menu.
my system details, in case it makes a difference:
- NixOS 25.11
- Linux kernel 6.18.34
- PipeWire 1.4.9
finally, here is a little demo featuring some chiptune chaos to prove it works ;)
